E-Books & Audio Books

When I was little my big sister taped a record of The Hobbit which she got from the Library. It wasn’t in great condition but I loved those tapes. I loved hearing the book read out loud and I listened to them for many, many years. I’ve never actually read the book though I know the story well!

The house that I live in now is above a quilting shop and the Woman who owns it listens to audio books constantly while she works.

I think audio books are such a valuable thing and they are listened to by many people in many situations. I’m glad to see that they are available in lots of accessible forms. and that they have embraced new technologies so that they are not a lost medium.

Second Life

I can see how people would enjoy this and like a lot of video games get sucked into spending endless amounts of time ‘in’ it but I think it’s a bit over the top. I can’t believe people spend real money there, or make real money for that matter. I think it could be utilised in a library… virtual book reading anyone? But as some other people have mentioned how do you make it “safe” for students?!

The site is blocked at work so I didn’t get to look around but I have heard about it before…

I really like the parody page www.getafirstlife.com very funny!

Podcasts

I love Podcasts. They are such a great way to catch up on radio programs you haven’t been able to catch live. I think they could be a great inclusion into a Library website, for students to do book reviews perhaps?

I enjoy the Triple J Podcast of Dr Karl’s Science show…

Video

YouTube is blocked at my work but I’m able to access TeacherTube. I think it’s a great idea to quickly learn how to do something, often you need someone to show you how to do it and now you can be shown by people all over the world.

I’ve chosen this clip from Little Britain because I really like the show and it’s in a Library so it has some relevance…

It took me a little while to work out how to embedded the video, even though it’s actually very simple – perhaps that was the problem!

I would put it in then view post and only see a blank box. It wasn’t until I did it then viewed the Blog that it showed the black video box with the ‘loading’ symbol… but nothing loaded.

I’m still getting the blank box so I’m not quite sure what I’m doing wrong…

Wikis & Rollyo

Arrgh! I find Rollyo completely frustrating and useless!

I can really see the potential for Wikis, especially with students. But I’m wary of the potential for misuse… I think if people see something in writing on the web they will often not question it, when it may not be true.

As I recall there was something dodgy going on with a major Australian Political Part and the use of a Wiki….. ??

Social Bookmarking & Library 2.0

I’m undecided about the usefulness of del.icio.us. It seems a bit messy and yet another thing I have to create an account for, remember a password for, log into, etc… I guess for some people this would be a very useful tool but I’m just not sure I can be bothered with it. Which is not to say that I’ll never be bothered with it!

Library 2.0 is an exciting development. I think as the technologies are ever changing they are more and more useful in the Library world. It’s important for Libraries to engage their clients… and if the client is more technologically aware than the Library then they will become disinterested.

I’m currently working on the committee that’s redesigning the Library website at my workplace. We are all excited about using Library 2.0/Wed 2.0 Technologies to make the site more tantalising, useful, engaging, and accessible. I think it’s important to weed out the applications that are a waste of time and focus on the genuinely important ones.

Google

I’ve been having a great time with all the Google features I never knew existed; iGoogle, Google docs, Google books, Google Maps etc…

I feel like there is so much potential for use but I’m not sure when I’ll put my new found knowledge into practice, although I have been playing around with my new iGoogle page. It does beg the question “Do all these aplications just encourage time waisting?”.

I especially like the idea of Google docs.

I think Google books could be incorperated into our website somehow.

Here’s the map of where my workplace is …

Explore Myspace & Facebook #2

A very weired thing happened after I posted my last post possibly because it has Myspace and Facebook in the title. I received an email from WordPress about a comment on my Blog that needed to be mediated… it was from

http://music1.ebookshq-online.com/?p=51816

and I just said it was spam ’cause I don’t know what it is other than it appears to be a MP3 download site. I feel a bit strange about them having an excerpt of my Blog and a link to it on their site. This is what appears on their site…

fionawrote an interesting post today on Explore Myspace & Facebook Here’s a quick excerpt So I’ll try accessing it at home… However I’m very familiar with Facebook and have had an account for about 6 months. I have a couple of work colleagues as ‘friends’ and find it a dynamic and useful network tool.

I guess that’s the Global Village for you!

Explore Myspace & Facebook

Well I don’t have access to Myspace at the school I work at. I find the concept interesting so would like to see how libraries are utilising it. So I’ll try accessing it at home…

However I’m very familiar with Facebook and find it a dynamic and useful network tool.

RSS Feeds

I managed to open a Google Mail account and a Google Reader account and have subscribed to some reads but I’m not sure how to add it to my Blog. There doesn’t seem to be any instructions on this .

Will have another look and see if I can find more info.
